The Dong Son culture of the prehistoric Bronze Age in Vietnam was influential throughout South East Asia. The Dong Son people, also known as Lac, were skilled bronze casters and the eponymous drums are found throughout Southeast Asia and China and date back to the 4th millennium BC. The drums range in height from a few inches to over six feet and are often of considerable weight. The function of these drums remains unclear but it has been postulated that they may have been used in warfare or as part of ceremonial rites.
