Sitting With...Becki Owens

Interior designer, home stager, and now lighting designer - Becki Owens is doing it all!  With both her her parents renovating houses, and her dad having a paint store, Becki was basically born into the world of interior design, so it’s no surprise that this is where life has taken her.  Now a popular designer, blogger, and trendsetter Becki Owens is well known for her fresh “Pinterest-worthy” designs. When the opportunity to collaborate with Hudson Valley Lighting arose she brought the same design approach to her collection of simple yet elegant lighting.  Excited to learn of this collaboration, we reached out to Becki to get some more insight on her collection and design philosophy.  Let’s see what she had to say.

How did your collaboration with Hudson Valley Lighting come around?

Hudson Valley Lighting approached me to collaborate on a lighting collection. I was thrilled and flattered to have the opportunity to work with them.

How hands on were you with the collection?

Very hands on. Each piece is a collaboration of my vision and Hudson Valley Lighting’s expertise in light design.

What kinds of spaces do you envision your lights in?

The Ivy lights are the perfect sconce to use on a bathroom or in a kitchen above open shelving. The Richie and Res collections work beautifully in entry ways, laundry rooms, above a kitchen nook or kitchen island.

What’s your biggest inspiration (in general)?

I’m inspired by the community I’m living in. I live in a small Southern California beach town. You will see a lot of coastal, fresh influences in my work. I also love bohemian fashion and like a modern bohemian mix in my designs.

What’s your favorite color palette?

I love a combination of black, white and neutral with pops of pink.

What’s your favorite type of space to design?

I love to design kitchens. It’s the entertaining hub of the home. I love to transform them into open, light filled spaces - perfect for hosting.

What’s more fun to work on, interior design or product design?

I have always had a love for interior design and continue to enjoy building new homes and updating old ones. Designing products has been a great extension of my love for interior design. I’m able to create pieces that work beautifully in my designs.

What trends do you think are going to be big in 2019?

I think we will see black accents, tiles and black in the kitchen. On the other side of the spectrum, we will see a move from crisp white to warmer whites and premier tones in paint.

What one thing do you think every room needs?

Every room needs beautiful statement and accent lighting. Good lighting is key to making a space feel polished, fresh and updated.

Any advice for aspiring designers?

I feel like people are hesitant to start designing and do a project because they don't have enough experience, but I say just start and do as many projects for friends and family as you can, until you get really comfortable.
