Rainbow Bright: 2019 Color of the Year Roundup
2018 is in its last few weeks and everyone is wondering what 2019 will bring. Paint companies started announcing their Color of the Year for 2019 as early as June, and with Pantone’s announcement of their Color of the Year earlier this month now is the time to take a look at what colors will be filling our homes in the coming year. We rounded up Pantone, Benjamin Moore, Behr, Sherwin Williams, and PPG’s Color of the Year picks and tossed in our own as well. Are you ready for some color?
Pantone - Pantone 16-1546 Living Coral
After last year’s choice of Ultra Violet that left many people baffled, everyone seems to be on board with Pantone’s Color of the Year this year - Living Coral. Described as “vibrant, yet mellow” the color is meant to provide warmth, comfort, and nourishment. It is a color that appears in our natural surroundings but also has a lively social media presence. I think it’s safe to say that we’ll be seeing much more Living Coral popping up in interiors next year than we did Ultra Violet this year.
Benjamin Moore - Metropolitan AF - 690
If you were hoping for another bold color like last year’s Caliente you might be disappointed with Benjamin Moore’s 2019 Color of the Year. A soft gray with cool undertones, Metropolitan is said to reflect the sophistication of 21st century design. While it may seem like a tame pick, the color is versatile and interacts with natural light in interesting ways. Yes it’s gray, but it’s a complex gray that can work in almost any setting.
Behr - Blueprint S470 - 5
While a bit more bold than gray, Behr’s color of the year plays off of gray undertones. Blueprint is a rich blue that toes the line between too light and too dark to create a color with the perfect amount of saturation. This color is neutral enough to be used in a whole room and bold enough to serve as an accent color. Calm and soothing this color seems like a great choice for bedrooms and other spaces where you go to relax.
Sherwin Williams - Cavern Clay SW 7701
Sherwin Williams’ Color of the Year is in a similar palette as Pantone’s. Cavern Clay is a warm terracotta that hedges more towards rusty brown and brick orange than pink. The color is thought to inspire a sense of wanderlust, and bring to mind images of the American southwest. This warm and earthy neutral also pays homage to mid-century modern color palettes. We can see this color being popular amongst fans of southwest and Bohemian style.
PPG - Night Watch PPG1145 - 7
Perhaps the boldest of the bunch (and the one that was announced the earliest!), PPG’s Color of the Year is for the fans of jewel tones out there. Night Watch is all about reconnecting with nature. This luxurious deep shade of green is perfect for both elegant and maximalist settings. Those in charge of choosing the color worked off of the idea of biophilic design, and surrounding oneself with elements of nature, a trend in itself that’s like only to grow in 2019.
France & Son - Sage Green
We’re sticking with a more neutral tone and declaring Sage Green our Color of the Year for 2019. The color has been showing up more and more in Scandinavian spaces, taking a bit of the starkness out of minimalism. The color is versatile and works well with many different colors (including some of the other colors from this list!) making it practically a neutral. Light wood tones, which have also been gaining in popularity, really shine when placed next to sage green. While Greenery may have been the Color of the Year two years ago, we think sage green is set to have a really moment in 2019.
